"Promised Guests"

The precincts of the holy chamber
Equally parted by the glass
The crowd of hearts rushing through
The open doors of gold and brass

Eyes are wandering, hands are drawn
Hearts are focusing on a center known
Absent from eyes felt by the hearts
At every moments, noon and the dawn

Innocents, the sinful have been warmly
Welcomed morally by the kindest host
Urban, villagers, white and the black
With a neat clothing, or the face with dust

One side the ladies the other the men
Crying, praying, seeking the cure
Of pains of the heart and the illness more
Thousands, hundreds, and dozens of ten

All were promised surely by the lord
To be replied on Revival Day
At Bridge, and Recon, and Record of the deed
Pilgrims visiting the Shrine three fold

Not a bit of pain may a person gain
Of crowd of men, feelings embodied
All wishing for human, being goodness
All around the world, wherever they lived

Hand s are stretched towards the heaven
Under the dome with colorful mirrors
Where upon Qandils of swinging bright
Amongst the tiles, blue and green

The chamber surrounded upon which there are
Four of gold vases, holding tulips
Sitting on the leaves out of branches
Saluting the guests from ways far

Many whispering with foreheads on clay
With a humble heart and the secrets to say
Pray for the sons and daughters and the mate
Being kept healthy the evils away

Zahra My Grand daughter1
Whenever I look at my little granddaughter, Zahra, and my grandson, Muhammad Javad, I usually review the course of events that have led to the present day when I enjoy visiting my Sayyedah daughter-in-law, Marzeiah from Mashhad, my beautiful granddaughter, and my charming grandson, while myself being a Khadim of the holy shrine of Imam Riza (A.S). It began when during a summer holiday I, my wife, and our five children were sitting round at home in Qom. My wife began complaining in a happy mood, “You have never taken us to Mashad to perform a Ziyarah to the holy shrine of Imam Riza(A.S).” While feeling ashamed, I replied, “There are only two problems. The first is the lack of enough money for the bus fare and the second is a residence in Mashad

The family chat ended and I left home aimlessly and went downtown. After walking along a few streets I found myself at the entrance of the Baqir-al-Ulum Institute where I had taught English to the Iranian seminary students and Farsi to the non-Iranian ones. I decided to enter and visit my friends there. After sitting on a chair and being offered a cup of tea, the clergy in charge of teaching programs at the institute put a chubby envelop on a plate on the table before me. Then he continued, “Please pardon us. You have taught languages to the clergy students who are the soldiers of Imam Zaman (A.T.F), so we cannot compensate your struggles. This little amount of money is only a small gift from the treasury of Imam Zaman (A.T.F).” Then he added, “We have provided residence in Mashad for the lecturers of the institute and their families for the summer holidays. If you wish, we will introduce you to the man in charge there, and you can stay with your family as long as you desire.”
The envelope contained 20000 Toomans, the amount of money sufficient for the bus fare. For me, it was a dream. Both of the problems were solved. I returned home happily and suggested my family to get ready for the journey. They were surprised. When I told the story, they became very happy too. Maybe, that day or the day after we set off for Mashed. We stayed there for about ten days. The days were passing and the last day was approaching hurriedly. On the last day we were standing in the street circling the holy shrine and watching the golden dome when I felt lonely and a shadow of strangeness covered my heart. Behind my tearful eyes my sincere heart began whispering, “O Imam! They say that if the one visiting your holy shrine for the first time wishes any thing, you will grant those wishes. Now I’m the one visiting your holy shrine for the first time with my family, please grant my wishes. I would like to have some relatives in Mashad. I would like them to be Sadat (descendants of the Holy prophet) and clergies. Then as a teacher I wish to pass my last years of educational services in Mashad, near you.”
The following day we left for Qum. Some years passed. Our children grew up. Our elder son Abdul Karim who was studying in the third grade of high school wished to marry. It was a bad situation. He had not even got his diploma, and could not even earn his own living. Who would agree to get married to him? No family would allow their daughter to get married to him. But he insisted on fulfilling his wish and we had to do something for him. We visited a few families to seek their daughters marriage to‘Abdul Karim, but none of them agreed.
One afternoon when I returned home from work ‘Abdul Karim came to me and began talking, “Today I gave a ring to Ayatollah Khamenei’s embassy in Qom and said that according to Islamic rules it was obligatory for one to marry if one feels that he needs to marry. The clergy on the phone replied that it was the holy verse of the Qur’an that instructs this. When I said that I could not afford to run a family and no family would agree to have their daughter get married to me, he replied that God would grant by his grace and then continued if I would like to marry a girl from Mashad.” I asked ‘Abdul Karim about his opinion. He said that he would leave his answer until later.
He gave me a telephone number. It belonged to another clergy man who could arrange the case. I called that clergy man and investigated the proposal. He said that a great clergy Sayyed from Mashad had asked him to introduce a good young boy from Qom to marry his daughter. As we were a well known family in Qom it took only a short time before the two families were introduced to each other and ‘Abdul Karim became their son-in-law.
When the two families became relatives they sat together and said strange stories. Two of the stories which were really strange were told by my daughter-in-law's mother. She said, "I had decided not to allow my daughter to marry the boy who was coming from Qom, but my decision could only last until our doorbell rang and I went to the door to open it to the new guests. Just at the moment that I glanced at the face of the young boy, my heart changed deeply. I welcomed my new guests and went to my daughter in the next room and said that I had changed my mind. When my daughter asked the reason I could only say that I didn't know why, and I continued that he was a lovable boy." He also said another strangest story," None of our relatives knew anything about the marriage. After the marriage ceremony was held, one of my brothers who is a panegyrist (maddah) came to our house and investigated what events were going on in our house. I replied that nothing was going on in our family. He said in a mocking way, ‘Do you really believe that I'm unaware of what is going on here?’ I asked him to tell us what was going on in our family then if he knew. He continued, ‘Marziah has got married.’ When I asked him in a denying mood who had said that, he continued, ‘Last night I dreamt that Marziah was sitting in the holy shrine of Imam Riza (A.S) beside a young boy and they were reciting the prayer for pilgrimage together. I got angry with my niece sitting near a non-mahram young boy. I went to them and asked the boy why he was sitting by my niece while he was a non-mahram to her. He pointed to me to keep quiet. And while pointing to the burial chamber he continued that Imam Riza (A.S) had declared their marriage oration (Khotbah).’ Then I had no choice but admitting that it was true."
Two of my wishes had been granted by the merciful Imam (A.S). In 1379 (2002), 8 years of my educational services were left before retirement. Some uncontrollable problems were growing among our relatives which influenced our family, too. The days of our lives were passing bitterly. One day while the family were sitting around in a room and talking about those problems and of our inner suffering I suggested the family to move to another city. At first it seemed to be a joke but as the dialogues proceeded the idea changed into a real decision and the whole family agreed on it. Regarding the cities, there were three choices, Tehran, Shiraz, or Mashad. In Tehran the costs of living was very high, in addition, the cultural atmosphere there did not correspond to our style of life. The second choice was also rejected because ‘Abdul Karim was living and studying in Mashad. If we moved to Shiraz it meant that a distance of more than 1000 km. between us would change into more than 2500km. All agreed on moving to Mashad. I said that the whole family should take an oath to stand against the problems of such a decision. They did so. I wrote a letter of request to the director general of the educational general office of the province and requested a move to Mashad. When I met the director general and offered the letter, he was amazed. I had an important post at the general office. He asked me to give him a window of one or two weeks in which to announce his decision. After about ten days I met him again and sought his agreement on the request. He said," If you had decided to move to any other city I would never agree on it. But in the case of Mashad, I'm unable to disagree with it."
The next day when ‘Abdul karim rang and his mother told him that we had decided to move to Mashad, he said that he was aware of our decision. When he was asked how he knew that, he replied that the night before he had dreamt that he had met me on a street in Mashad and asked me what I was doing there. I had replied that we had moved to Mashad.
Everything went well. We rented a good villa house where we lived for eight years. In Mashad, I was appointed as a high school boss, the nearest high school to the holy shrine of Imam Riza(A.S). It was only on the first days that the head of the regional educational department took me to the holy shrine of Imam Riza (A.S) to introduce me to one of the high ranking officials of Astan Quds Razavi. When I announced that I wished to have the opportunity of giving services to the pilgrims of the holy shrine of Imam Riza(A.S) voluntarily, he permitted me to go there and help him with his work.
My third wish was also granted. Now that I'm approaching the end of my educational services before my retirement, I feel that Imam Riza(A.S) has received me with open arms and has granted my wishes in the best way. Although there were thousands of people waiting in turn to be accepted as a Khadim of the holy shrine, he accepted me in his own special way as a formal volunteer Khadim of his holy shrine. Thanks to God thousands of times.

The Broom of a Khadim1
It was a cold winter afternoon. Under the faint rays of the sun, Zuhre was sitting on the eroded stairs in their house, leaning against the wall and embracing her folded legs and gazing at the leafless apple and pear trees in the middle of the yard covered with snow. The half-warm rays of the sun had melted some of the snow but the stone-made water container in the yard was frozen.
Zuhre loved winter. She felt a connection between the winter cool and her own life. The life was no more beautiful for her. Her sad eyes, bonny cheeks, and weak hands expressed her internal pain and suffering.
It was after the sunset and getting dark. Her chronic headache had begun. At first she tried not to take it seriously, so she got up and began walking, but it was really serious. She held her head between her palms tightly and sat back on the stairs. Her headache soothed a bit.
A cold wind was blowing and wiping the bare branches of the trees. Zuhre could not bear the cold any more, so she got up and ascended the stairs. After stepping on the balcony she turned her head back and gave a glance colder than that of winter to the yard. A yellow thing resting on the white snow of the garden caught her attention “O’ God! What is it in the garden?” she thought. She walked down the stairs towards the garden. It was a canary.
“I hope it is alive.” She wished. She picked it up and held the half-dead body of the canary between her palms. “It is alive!” she shouted happily. Then she ran her delicate fingers into her pocket and pulled out a handkerchief embroidered with a beautiful rose bud and wrapped the canary in it and hurried up the stairs smoothly.
“O’my yellow canary! What are you doing here? You have surely escaped from your cage” She addressed it. She looked at the sky. The last edge of the crimson color was leaving the west of the world and a light snow had begun. The wind was throwing the bits of snow against the walls and the trees. Zuhre opened the wooden door of the room, entered it and closed the door behind herself.
The warm and pleasant temperature in the room freshened the bird. She found a small carton box and placed it by the stove and covered its bed with a piece of warm woolen cloth under and of cotton over it and placed the canary in it. After a few moments the little bird was warm and began moving, then opened its eyes. A smile of satisfaction appeared on Zuhre’s lips.
The samovar was boiling on a small table. Zuhre bent her head down to the canary and murmured, “Why did you come here? Certainly you knew I am also alone, but you should know that my loneliness will not last long. The doctors say that I will never make recovery from my disease. My illness is in an advanced state. The doctors are disappointed. I’ve got really tired. I’m leaving very soon. You shouldn’t come here. You should have gone somewhere else wherein there is happiness rather than grief. A canary should sing a happy song not a sad one. Canary is a symbol of happiness.” Then she sorrowfully continued, “You know! In my house a crow is needed to cackle, since I’m dying. In the spring of youth, I have to bid farewell. Then Abbas will remain alone. I feel sad for him. Do you know why? Because I love him very much. I know that he did not like to do it. Now he is very sad. He apologized to me for it. He is not to be blamed. He did it unwillingly. When we were moving to this house, I was sitting and arranging goods and chattels. Abbas was carrying a table into the room. He didn’t see me and hit the corner of the table at my head. There was an ache in my head. At first I didn’t take it seriously, but it grew more severe. O’ the canary! Your heart is so much small. How can it bear such an excessive grief?”
Zuhre got up to go to the kitchen. The canary flapped its little wings as if it had understood her words and wanted to advise her not to get disappointed and leave the cage of disappointment just as it had left its cage and remain as a friend of it.
While carrying a tray with a cup of tea in it Zuhre murmured, “Why doesn’t this headache leave me comfortable?” She left the tray by the samovar and held her head tightly with her hands, “O’ God! I’ve become weary. Please give me coup de grace!” Her eyesight grew dim and she felt dizzy and nauseous, so she went to the bed and laid her head on the pillow and cried loudly. Not long after a voice was heard. Abbas who had returned home from work entered the room. He looked at the cold walls of the room. The sorrowful atmosphere in the home caused by his wife’s headache depressed him. As his carelessness was the cause of such a disaster, he felt sad and was shameful of Zuhre. He left his bag in a corner and called,“ Zuhre….! Zuhre….!”
Hearing her husband’s voice she got up and went before the mirror. There she cleaned up the tears and despite having a headache she entered the living room with a smile on her lips.
“ Hello, Abbas! When did you return home? Come on! Sit down. Let me bring you a cup of tea.” She returned to the kitchen. While pouring the tea into the cup, she continued, “The weather is cold outside, isn’t it!” She tried not to look at Abbas directly for a long time so as to avoid her puffy eyes being seen by him. Abbas replied, “Yes, that’s right. It’s too cold.” Zuhre continued, “I have bought some milk for you. It’s good for your sore throat. I’ll bring it in a few moments.” Then she left the room. Abbas sat by the samovar table. He felt sorry for her. He didn’t know what to do. All of the physicians who had examined her had told that they could only trust in God.
While the man was thinking about his wife, a book under the samovar table attracted his attention. He picked it up and opened it. It would read, “Death is pleasant. We come to the world to experience it rather than staying in it. Death is a passage way towards freedom, escaping from the cage of body………” the erosion of the sheets indicated that the book was read over and over and that his wife was living in a psychological crisis.
The tears dropping down his eyes wet the pages and the word “death” was magnified with a drop of it. He closed the book. Zuhre entered the room with a glass of milk. Abbas said, “You had better not to work so much. It is not good for you. By the way, how is your health?” With a cold and superficial smile, Zuhre replied, “I’m well. See? This canary was chilling in the garden. I took it here and let it get warm. When it is Ok. We will let it fly away, but I will not remain alive by that time.” “What do you mean by that? You will get well. I’m sure. You should get well, for the sake of the baby. Please don’t think about death. Stop studying these kinds of books! Ok?”
“Abbas! We are not children. My illness is not a jest. It has advanced from 30% to 80%. You know I’m on the point of death.” Zuhre replied with quivering voice, “I’m only worried about our baby. I pray you to look after it well.”
The atmosphere of the room was filled with Zuhre’s sobbing. Abbas tried to calm her whereas he himself wished to burst into tears and tell his wife the words stuck in his heart. He wished to tell her how shameful of her he was and that without her, the life would be dim and happiness meaningless for him. He wished to tell her how his heart was pressed when he looked at her sad eyes. But he could tell none of them and he only could look at his wife’s painful face silently and tried to calm her. Each word of her broke him down. After a short dialogue both of them remained silent.
The eyes of both of them were drowned in the tears. “Zuhre, let’s go to the holy shrine and seek refuge of Imam Riza (A.S) once more” Abbas suggested eagerly. “No, I won’t go. I did it several times, but didn’t regain my health. Maybe I’m so sinful that I do not deserve his blessings” Zuhre replied. Abbas continued, “It’s not true. This time, by God’s will, we will be granted with our need. Imam Riza (A.S) is too kind. He never considers our bad deeds. If you agree, we will go tonight.”
That night they set off for the Haram. On the way Zuhre had a feeling of being comfortable, as if her husband’s words had alleviated her. When her attention was attracted by the golden dome, she felt even more comfortable.
The man’s need was wrapped in his look and sent to Imam Riza’s (A.S) holy shrine. His heart was pressed with grief and he felt that without Imam Riza’s (A.S) help, such a destructive sorrow would break him down. “O’ Imam Riza (A.S)! My wife has lost endurance. She is suffering pain night and day. I beg you, dear Agha to grant her Shifa. You stood surety for a deer! You who were so kind to a deer lamb surely are kind to my baby, too, so I beg you to grant my wife’s health and let her bring up her own baby in her own arms. O’ Imam Riza (A.S)! Please bring to an end my wife’s discomfort” he murmured. While her eyes were making ablution with tears.
The celestial sound of reciting the holy Qur’an echoing in the courtyards touched the pilgrims’ mind gently. Abbas was surprised when he glanced at Zuhre. How had it happened that without taking medicine she had fallen asleep? Her sorrowful and innocent face looked kinder than before.
The man’s eyes were filled with tears. He begged the Imam (A.S) not to return them empty- handed this time. When he turned his head to his wife again, she had opened her eyes. She excitedly asked, “Where did the Khadim go?” “Which Khadim?” Abbas asked.
Zuhre felt that for a pleasant and golden moment all atoms of her existence were illuminated with the radiance of the light of the eighth sun of the heaven of Imamate (S.A). “Zuhre! Why are you so excited?” Abbas asked. Zuhre replied, “For a moment, I fell asleep. In my sleep, I dreamt that the Khoddam were sweeping and cleaning the courtyard. One of them whose visage was more luminous approached me and said, “Get up, please!” I replied, “I can’t.” For the second time, while tapping my feet gently, with the handle of the sweeper, he repeated, “Get up!” I grasped the end of the handle and got up.
A pleasant smile blossomed on the lips of the couple. They were frantic with joy. The world presented itself to them with all its beauties. Zuhre’s pains were washed away with the pure essence of Shifa. The mirrors of their hearts and gems of their eyes were glazed with tears of joy. At the moment when the fountains of excitement and gnosis flowed through their soul along with the fragrance of alloeswood and heavenly perfume, the best memory was engraved in their mind.
How beautiful was the heavenly melody played at that moment and how pleasant was the jug of Shifa received from the hands of the friend.

A Reward for a patient wife
It was night. The sky just like an angry lion was roaring successively, and from time to time horrible lightning made everywhere light up. The family including me, my wife and the five children were sitting around the table cloth spread for dinner. I had a glance at the five pale faces lacking any smile on their lips, the waves of a mysterious amazement were reflecting from them. I wonder why I felt their look was filled with hostility, fear, uncertainty, and abjectness. Maybe they were waiting for a storm which had previously happened on many occasions. There was another lightning flash followed by a frightening thunder clap that vibrated all the glass panels. My little daughter screamed and threw herself into her mother’s arms.

Maybe it was because of her cry or the thunder that my whole body began shaking. I was psychologically and mentally disturbed which was followed by a convulsion. My madness always arose in this way. No more excuse was needed.
I angrily picked up a jar of water and threw it towards my daughter, but my wife hurried between and was hit on the forehead. The stream of hot blood flowed down her cheeks. The other children trembling out of fear hid themselves in the other room. With a bloody face, my wife hurried towards the mantelshelf to pick up my pill container while my attention was drawn to the old radio newly mended by my son, which was broadcasting happy music. I imagined it was mocking me, so I picked it up and threw it against the wall. It was broken into pieces as a result. My wife returned with a pill and a glass of water. But I received the water and spilled it onto her face, then after hitting the door posts against the frame I ran into the yard.
That night I walked under a heavy rain for hours and reviewed the events of the past twenty years. I remembered the events that occurred during the suffocating Pahlavi regime due to which I was afflicted with such a neurotic disease and changed our home into a hell for my wife and children.
My eyes were closed to the reality. They could see no sign of life, but the storm of life was blowing, sometimes slowly, sometimes violently. When it was violent, I beat, broke, cursed, or burned our things. My poor wife would bear my ill words with tearful eyes and a blackened face. She only tried to calm me down. This disturbance was endless. It was my unwilling illegal and violent behaviour that would send my dear wife to the police station or the judge. She went there only to make me understand that all these deeds were madness.
That stormy night for me also ended at the police station, but as usual my wife returned me home. Not just as a skilled psychotherapist but also because of her modest kindness she disclosed the dark points of my soul and took the lantern of life into the dark spaces of my mind and tried to show me the ways of escaping from the world of madness and nightmares. My kind and patient wife reminded me of our love of the first years, respecting our contract of marriage, and for the sake of our five children’s destiny would bear all that violence. She had a mixture of love, sense of responsibility, and bitterness in her. Our children were deprived of fatherly affection and kindness and also of welfare because of the family’s poverty.
Hoping that I would recover from my illness, my wife tolerated all those adversities, but I was just like a dying tree, the leaves of which grew yellow and fall one by one. My state of health worsened day by day, due to severe headaches and neurotic reflections I was sent to the hospital again. My wife had turned into a defeated archer with a broken bow and empty quiver. She was at a critical junction, the death with an eternal tranquility or life with so much suffering and bewilderment.
It was for the first time that she did not come to the hospital to visit me. In the darkness of my loneliness I could observe her weary visage swinging between the two choices. I wasn't sure how long she could cover her exhaustion and pains with patience and tolerance. It took a long time, however, at last she came. It was the night before the 15th of Sha‘ban, the birthday of Imam Zaman(A.S) that she came with a bunch of red roses.
That night she took me to the Haram. We stepped into the Haram with both our hearts broken, sad and disappointed with everybody and everything. In the Imam courtyard behind the steel grill, we sought refuge in the holy Imam (A.S).
From the depths of her heart and with a wailing tone she began praying to the Merciful God. She made a recourse to the Immaculate Imams (A.S). She cried severely as if she wanted to turn her tolerance, patience, and keeping silence for twenty years into tears and penetrate them through the ears of people of the heavens and the eyes of the people of the earth.
It was the night of hope, the banquet of light, the night of happiness, love, and fulfillment of long, long wishes. It was the night followed by the birthday of the last Imam (A.S). My wife was swinging between hope and disappointment. After midnight my languished eyes were submitting to sleep. I was in the state of half wakefulness when I glanced at my wife’s face. I heard her voice among the other pilgrims’ voices calling: O’ Imam Rḍā(A.S)! O’ Imam Zaman(A.S)! Come to my relief, please! I have become weary!
Having heard these words I turned confused, nobody was there. In a frenzy I woke up, due to my excitement I was shaking uncontrollably. The gentle wind was sliding on my face. My soul was filled with a deep joy. I felt that I was dancing in the sky, over the white clouds with yellow margins painted by the sun, in an infinite atmosphere, on the blue blanket of sky, among the green leaves of Lombardy poplars, and over the red rose leaves. There was a diffusion of light everywhere. Thousands of lights green, white, red, and yellow were radiating, colorful lights all around. A pleasant sound of supplication was heard.
Unwillingly I shouted: O’ Imam Zaman(A.S)! , O’ Imam Rḍā (A.S)! I feel well. I feel no headache anymore! My wife was astonished. She couldn’t believe she witnessed what she wished to dream.
The Merciful God had responded to her prayer. Both of us were crying unwillingly, but this time we were shedding tears of joy and hope. These tears were for being, surviving. We were crying and the people around us, most of whom accompanied a diseased one to seek refuge in the Imam(A.S), were rushing toward us while reciting Takbeer, and Salawat and expressing feelings for our joy. The Khoddam of the holy shrine saved us from the excited crowd by taking us to one of the offices and let them calm down after observing that great miracle.
After a few hours, when the first beautiful rays of the sun gave the glad tiding of the first day of our new life, we returned to the courtyard. The people who had witnessed the miracle embraced and kissed me. We stayed among those believing and hopeful people for more than an hour, an eternal strange feeling was holding us together. Observing that strange event increased their hope and belief too.
Currently by the grace of God and the blessings of the Immaculate Imams(S.A) there is no sign of any neurotic problem in me. Alhamdu Lillah.
